Watchpoint: Galapagos

Solo Level Designer

The level design in Overwatch is super interesting to look into as the roster of characters have such varied styles of movement and engagements, especially in Deathmatch, can be approached from all angles. For MMU’s Environment and Level design module, I chose to make a level based on Blizzard’s scrapped concept art for an underwater research facility in the Galapagos region. The combination of nature and science fiction really spoke to me as a setting and would fit nicely into the lore we know about the Gwishin faction.

I researched how to design a multi-layered battle arena that could create interesting interactions between key engagement gates as players navigate the boiler room, dormitories and a production line leading to a deconstructed Gwishin mech. Spawn points were designed to optimise the time between respawning and entering a fight to approximately 5-15 seconds.

This project used sourced assets from the Unreal Engine library, although I modelled and painted my own Gwishin drone using Maya and Substance Painter.
